24-Year-Old Zodiac Earring Project

In Chinese tradition, every twelfth year is one's zodiac year (benmingnian). With the Grand Duke approaching, that year calls for red socks, red strings, a wish for smooth sailing. This work steps away from those conventional red objects and tries to wear 'zodiac year' on the earlobe.

The choice of earrings as the medium came from an accident: luggage holding years of my collection was lost. With that regret, I chose another way to keep making earrings — as a year-long project, a photo of the earrings worn, every day. Across the year, 354 photos, several videos and daily snapshots, together with scanned earring sketches and extracted red pixels, converge into a 24fps loop animation.

Red is the dominant tone, and the materials are gathered from everyday life — red thread, beads, acrylic, epoxy resin… Each pair of earrings takes its shape from that day's state, the materials used, and cultural references, randomly combining into the form of the moment.

When a viewer approaches, the sensor freezes one frame of the image — inviting you to linger a few seconds longer in a stranger's everyday.
